Scottish Coal

Our Locations

The locations of the main mining sites and future prospects
are directly related to the underlying geological structure.
The productive coal seams are found within the Coal Measures and the underlying Limestone Coal Group, all of the Carboniferous period.

Surface mining of coal can only take place where the coal seams are relatively shallow and these areas are well mapped geologically across Scotland.

Whilst there are several smaller coalfields not currently being worked, the main operations are all in what is described as the Central Valley. SRG and other companies all have active interests in an area which generally extends from Dalmellington (East Ayrshire) in the south-west to Glenrothes/Leven (Fife) in the north east.

The current locations of Scottish Coal's main operational sites, including rail loading points are shown on the attached plan. The potential development and renewable sites are shown on our estates map.
