Reliable provision
Coal-fired power stations provide a reliable and consistent energy source compared to renewable energy sources which can be weather dependent or gas which is increasingly sourced from distant countries via vulnerable pipelines. For example, coal produces up to 50% of UK electricity at peak times throughout the winter months.
Security of supply is becoming a very important issue for UK power stations, particularly given the supply issues experienced in the natural gas sector due to high reliance on Russian supply.
