About SRG

Energy security

With the decline in nuclear power generation and indigenous oil and gas resources together with the slow realisation of renewable energy sources, coal will remain an important non intermittent energy source for years to come.

Coal remains a major source of electricity generation and heating. In 2010 coal produced 29% of UK electricity, a figure which rises to 50% in winter. It constitutes a core supply that can be relied upon when adverse weather conditions affect supply from renewable sources.

Approximately 70% of coal burnt in the UK is imported, mainly from Russia. SRG produces approximately 17% of the total coal produced in the UK.

The UK and Scottish Governments have recognised the dangers of relying on imported energy fuels. They are developing policies to ensure diversification and security of supply, recognising the value of indigenous energy sources.

Governments recognise that in the decade ahead, failure to maintain substantial supplies of coal could lead to an over-dependence on gas, setting the scene for high and volatile prices.

It is the most abundant and enduring source of power we, as a nation, possess and provides base load power to offset the intermittency problems associated with many renewable energy sources. We all use energy powered by coal every day of our lives. In winter months over 40% of our electricity comes from coal and without it, the UK could not run effectively.
